Halloran sloshed back toward the dinghy, box under his arm, water now at his knees. He forced the lid. Inside was no gold. Just a ledger of names, hundreds of them, and a single brass key tagged "the door." He looked up at the hill rising from the center of the island and understood the box was only a clue.
Halloran rowed back to the trawler with the box and the key, leaving the door sealed. He'd seen enough. Back on deck the captain reached for the box, but Halloran dropped it overboard. The names and the key sank into the dark water. "Some things should stay drowned," he said. The captain only nodded, like he'd hoped someone would finally choose that.
