By dusk the radio battery was fading. The tone stuttered, dropped, then came back weaker. "If it dies, we lose our only guide," Mara said. Ahead, through the trees, she spotted a thin line of smoke rising into the gray sky.
The radio died for good with a soft click. "That's it," Dell said. But Mara fixed her eyes on the smoke and started walking. "Smoke means a person. People mean help." They stumbled toward it through the dark trees, calling out as loud as they could.

A flashlight beam cut through the trees and swung onto their faces. A woman in a ranger jacket lowered it, stunned. "You're the kids from the Cessna," she said. "My cabin's just past the ridge. I've got a radio and a warm stove. Come on, you're done walking."
