Mara stuffs two bricks of cash into her dive bag. The men she loved died for this, and she figures she is owed. But the moment she turns, a Vares diver blocks the breach, hand out. "Half," he signals. "Or neither of us leaves."
Mara nods and splits the cash. They surface together, wary, and part on the dock without a word. She tells herself it was the smart trade. But the logbook is still down there, the one she didn't grab, and it will keep her up every night for the rest of her life.
