Mara speaks first. "Don't get on it," she says. The words just fall out. Theo freezes, toast in hand. Through the glass, the bus driver checks his mirror. "Stay. Just tonight. We always run out of time, and I'm so tired of running out." Theo sets the toast down slowly.

Theo laughs, but it's shaky. "You pick now? After a year of bus stops?" He sits anyway. "Fine. Then say the rest of it. The thing neither of us says. I'm not getting up until one of us does." He folds his arms and waits.

Mara breaks first. "I love you," she says. "I've loved you for months and I kept thinking there'd be more time." Theo's arms unfold. "There's time," he says. "Right now. We have right now." He takes her hands across the toast and the cold coffee and doesn't let go.
