Mara takes a breath. "Okay. No more almost. I love you, Theo. There. I said it first, so now you can't run." He stares at her, then drops back into the booth like his legs gave out. "I was going to say it on the bus," he admits. "To the window. Like a coward."
"Then say it to me instead," she says. Theo reaches across and takes both her hands. "I love you. Have for ages." Outside, another bus rolls past, and for once neither of them even looks at it. The waitress quietly refills their cold coffee and lets them be.
