Mara got to the corner shop, but Tomas had already left. The barista said he'd headed toward Main Street ten minutes ago. Mara's stomach dropped. That was the exact street. She turned and ran for it, screaming his name into the crowd.
Mara reached Main Street too late. The crowd was already gathered. The truck had stopped at an angle. She pushed through, but it wasn't Tomas on the ground. He stood beside her, pale, having pulled a stranger back instead. "You warned me," he said quietly. "So I watched the road for once."
