Slowly the hatchling creeps forward and climbs into her arms. Nerai carries it out of the pool and toward the sea-gate, water dripping from them both. The yard is empty and silent. The way is clear.
At the shore, Nerai lowers the hatchling into the waves. For a moment it sinks, and her heart drops. Then its wings flare open underwater, glowing silver, and it shoots away strong and sure. The runt was never weak. It just needed a chance.
