Nerai darts behind a stack of crates and holds her breath. The guard's lantern swings past, then moves on. She slips out the sea-gate and down to the shore, the hatchling trembling under her coat, the waves loud and close.
At the water's edge, the hatchling refuses to let go of her coat. It won't swim off. Nerai realizes it's too young and weak to survive alone out there. She'll have to hide it and raise it herself until it's strong. A harder, longer rescue begins.
