Nerai decides to steal it. She finds the keeper's keys hanging by the gate and slips one into the lock of the small pool. It clicks open. The hatchling lifts its head and stares at her with wide silver eyes.
She wraps the hatchling in her coat and carries it toward the sea-gate. It is heavier than it looks and keeps slipping. Behind her, a lantern flares. 'Who's there?' a guard calls. Nerai freezes in the dark.

Nerai darts behind a stack of crates and holds her breath. The guard's lantern swings past, then moves on. She slips out the sea-gate and down to the shore, the hatchling trembling under her coat, the waves loud and close.
