The hatchling is too scared to move. It backs into the corner of the pool and whimpers. Nerai climbs in beside it, the cold water soaking her legs, and holds out her open hands. 'I'm not them,' she whispers. 'I'm here to get you out.'
The hatchling trusts her, but it's shaking too hard to move fast. A keeper passes the pens with a torch, so Nerai crouches in the dark water and waits him out. The moment his light fades, she scoops the hatchling up and slips out the sea-gate to the open shore.
