The Last Dragon Is a Coward
fantasy◐ Mature"I won't fight," the dragon said. "But fighting isn't the only way to win." It rose up, enormous, scales scraping the stone. "The Ashen Legion fears two things. Old magic, and the dark. Lucky for your village, I am both." It crawled toward the gray morning light. "Come, boy. We have until sunrise to be clever."
The dragon flew the boy to the river above the valley. "The Legion must cross here," it said. "Help me." Together they shoved boulders into the narrow gap. The dragon breathed a slow, low heat, not to burn but to melt the snow on the peaks. Water began to rise behind the rocks. "When they're on the bridge," the dragon said, "we let it all go."
What happens next?
2 ways forwardThe Legion reached the bridge at dawn and crowded onto it, rank after rank. The boy looked at the dragon. The dragon nodded. Together they shoved the last boulder, and the dammed flood roared free. Water slammed down the valley and swept the bridge clean. The Ashen Legion was scattered downriver, and not one set foot in the village.
