The House Remembers Its Tenants
horror◐ Mature5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
Daniel kicked the locked door open. The room was empty, the rocking chair still. But the candle on the sill had burned down and was now climbing back up, the wax rising, the flame growing taller as they watched. "It's running backward," Mara breathed. "The house is going back to before us."
As the candle climbed, so did the house. The wallpaper smoothed itself back, dust lifted off the floor, a child's drawings reappeared on the walls. Mara and Daniel felt themselves going thin and faint, like the house was winding back past the part where they existed. Daniel grabbed her hand so they'd at least be erased together.
