"Forget the door," Mara said. They went down to leave, but the front door now opened onto a brick wall. Daniel pressed his ear to a side door and heard the agent's voice, faint and pleasant: "Sixty-one thousand. Eleven rooms." She was already showing the place to the next couple. While they were still inside it.

Mara pounded on the side door, shouting at the next couple to run, don't sign, get out. They couldn't hear her. But the new wife paused, frowned, and looked straight at the door Mara stood behind, as if she'd caught a whisper of two trapped voices on the other side. Then she smiled and signed anyway.
