Everything to Save Her

sci-fi◐ Mature

Elias doesn't touch the wheel. He just talks, calm and steady, like he rehearsed it. 'Mara, pull over. Right here. Trust me, please.' Something in his voice reaches her. She eases onto the shoulder. The truck thunders by a second later, missing them by inches. She's pale. 'How did you know?' He can't answer that yet.

Elias chooses to say nothing and just live this second chance. For a week it's perfect. Then he notices Mara never sleeps, never eats, and casts no shadow at noon. She's a copy the machine printed from his memories, and she's starting to glitch, repeating the same words. 'Trust me, please,' she says again, and again.

A possible continuation

Elias watches the copy of his wife loop and stutter, and he finally lets her go. He powers down the machine for the last time. The Mara-copy smiles, whole for one clear second. 'Thank you,' she says, and gently fades. He's alone, but the air is just air now, no copper, no perfume. He can finally start to heal.
