They sit on the shoulder, hearts pounding. Elias tells her everything: the machine, the nine months, her funeral. Mara listens, then opens her phone and shows him the date. It's not three years ago. It's three years from now. The machine sent him forward, into a Mara who was never supposed to exist. 'I died,' she says softly. 'I remember dying.'

Elias refuses to accept it. He drags Mara back to find the machine in this future and fix the timeline. They locate it in a ruined lab, still humming, kept alive by a government that has been hunting him across three years. He has one chance to send her back to a life where she lives and the world stays whole.

A possible continuation

The machine needs a power source to send her back, and the only one left is a living mind. Elias understands what he has to do. He sits in the chair and routes everything through his own body. 'Tell our kids I made it quick,' he jokes weakly, though they never got the chance to have any. He pulls the switch. Mara goes home. He becomes the spark that sends her.
