Everything to Save Her

sci-fi◐ Mature

Elias freezes. Seeing her breathe, hearing her hum, it's too much. He forgets the truck, the plan, everything. He just reaches over and holds her hand. The car keeps rolling toward the bridge in the rain. Mara smiles at him, confused but warm. 'You okay?' Up ahead, headlights swing wide across the wet lane.

At the last second Mara jerks the wheel herself, instinct kicking in. The car spins, clips the rail, and stops. They're both bruised but alive. She's shaking. 'I don't know why I turned. I just felt like I had to.' Elias realizes some part of her remembered the crash too. The past isn't as fixed as he thought.

They drive home slowly, both shaken. Over the next months Mara keeps having flashes: the truck, the bridge, a basement full of light. One night she finds the machine herself and understands what Elias did. She isn't angry. She takes his hand. 'Next time,' she says, 'we figure it out together.' For now, they're both still here.
