Rosa explained that her grandmother used the slot just once, to save a sick child by ordering medicine from the next day. 'Use it for someone else,' she said firmly, 'never just for yourself.' Edwin nodded slowly, thinking of all the people in town who might need help.
Edwin asked the slot to name the person in town who needed help most. Out slid a single word: ROSA. Heart pounding, he begged the slot for one detail and learned she would slip on her icy steps at dawn. He salted her path himself that night. She walked out safely and brought him coffee, never knowing why he was smiling.
