The Other Hand on the Wheel
sci-fi◐ Mature5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
The third car's door opens and an older Mara climbs out, gray-haired, calm. 'Both of you, stop,' she says. 'The loop only closes if the package changes hands once. You've passed it twice. We have to put it back in the first car before the timer ends.' She points. Forty seconds left.
They run for the first car, but the older Mara trips and the package skids across the wet lot. All three dive for it. The timer hits zero with the package in no one's hands. The lot, the cars, the rain, all of it blinks out, and Mara wakes at her dispatch desk, slip blank, no memory of why her hands are shaking.
