She Was Never Here
sci-fi◐ TeenBefore Mara touches anything, footsteps thump down the basement stairs. It's Eli, alive, holding a flashlight. 'I heard the humming again,' he says. He stares at the chair and the screen and the threads of light. 'Mara. What is this thing? And why does it have my name on it?'
Mara tells him everything, fast: the seven loops, the river, the machine she built from Dad's notes. Eli listens, pale. Then he says the thing that freezes her. 'Mara, Dad didn't build a machine to save people. He built it to hide one. There's a reason he never finished it.' He points at a locked drawer under the chair.

Every thread you trim costs you someone you forgot you loved.' Mara looks at Eli, then at the empty space in every old family photo. There was a third sibling. She's the price already paid.
