She Was Never Here

sci-fi◐ Teen

Mara pulls her hand back. She can't cut a piece of her brother's life without knowing what it does. Instead she leans in and studies the glowing threads. Saturday isn't a single line. It splits into dozens of smaller strands, all tangled together. One of them, thin and red, runs straight from the house to the river. She zooms in on it.

The red strand isn't random. Mara traces it back and finds the moment it begins: 3:14 p.m., when Eli gets a text and rushes out the door. She can't read the sender, but she sees his face change. Fear, then a decision. He's not just going for a walk. Someone is calling him to the river.

Mara waits in the real world for 3:14 to come. When Eli's phone buzzes, she snatches it first and reads the text: 'Come to the river. Bring the notes. Or I tell everyone what Dad did.' Now she understands. Someone is blackmailing him, and the river is a meeting spot, not an accident. She goes in his place. The man waiting there isn't a monster, just a scared old colleague of Dad's. She hands him copies of the notes, he deletes the threats, and it's over. No river. No loop. Just two tired people who knew her father.
