Uncle Tariq: "Admit it, Bilal. New number, same tricks. Last Eid you 'lost your phone' when it was your turn to bring drinks." Me: "I am genuinely a stranger." Uncle Tariq: "A stranger who reads our family chat? Even worse. Now you HAVE to come." Wait. That logic was airtight somehow?

Then a new message. From a number ending in 88. Bilal: "Guys I'm here?? This is my new number. Who have you been talking to??" The chat exploded. Two Bilals. Uncle Tariq typed and deleted three times. Uncle Tariq: "Then who is THIS?" Everyone was suddenly asking me. Even Bilal.

Grandma ended the debate with one message. Grandma: "Bilal comes. Wrong number also comes. I cooked for 20 anyway." Sunday, Bilal and I stood on the porch together like two kids on the first day of school. Bilal: "Rule one. Never bring fruit." Me: "I've heard." The door opened, and the smell of biryani did the rest.
