At the top, they found no one, just a wall covered in carved tally marks counting the days. Pete touched the latest mark. The cut was fresh. 'He was here,' Pete breathed. 'Today.' A door at the back of the room stood slightly open, leading down to caves they never knew existed.
They followed the stairs down into a dry cave with a cot, a stove, and shelves of food. The old keeper had built a home below the lighthouse. He stepped out of the shadows, calm and kind. 'I never left,' he told Pete. 'I just got tired of being watched.' The two old friends shook hands, and the secret was finally safe.
