The Lighthouse Keeper

I text my friend Jake: 'the lighthouse light is on.' / He: 'no it's not, it's been dark forever.' / 'I'm literally looking at it right now.' / He calls. 'Don't go there, Mara.'

I stay on the dock watching. The light flashes. Flashes again. Then—it stops. Everything dark for 30 seconds. Then it starts again. Slower this time. Like... Morse code.

The Morse code spells out: S-T-A-Y. Then again: S-T-A-Y. And I'm standing on the dock at midnight realizing something is actively using that light to *communicate*. And it's telling me not to leave.
