The Eleven O'Clock Sparrow

For nine years, same time, same place. 11 o'clock sharp—this brown sparrow lands on the fountain's third spoke, cocks its head, stays exactly forty seconds. I set my watch by it. Never late. Never early. Tuesday it didn't show. The square was empty. No people. No tourists. Just me. And for the first time in nine years, I knew why I needed it to be here.

My therapist asked once why I came here every Tuesday. "It's a ritual," I said. She asked what I was waiting for. I never answered. But standing there with the square empty and the sparrow missing—I finally knew. And I didn't want to.

"Elias?" I turned. Couldn't be. But it was. My sister. Walking across the empty square like she'd never stopped. Like nine years was nothing. Except she looked exactly the same. Not older. Not hurt. "What are you—" "Don't ask," she said. "Just come."
