The tape machine still works. Surprising. The tape crackles, then their father's voice fills the room. Older than they remember it. Softer. "I need to tell you things I can't say out loud," he says. "Not while I'm alive." And then he starts talking.
"I was unfaithful," their father says on the tape. "More than once. Your mother... she forgave me. But I never forgave myself. You should know that the best thing I ever did was keep her." The voice stops. That's it. Diane feels sick.
