The lawyer arrives in a gray suit, carrying a leather briefcase like something out of a movie that none of them wanted to be in. He sits at the kitchen table and listens to them explain. He doesn't write anything down. When they finish, he sighs. "You need to listen to all of them. Before anything else."
"If you destroy evidence—or don't report a crime—the estate could be liable," the lawyer explains. "Legally, you have to review the contents." Mara feels the walls closing. "So we have no choice," she says. "Not really," the lawyer agrees. Diane looks satisfied.
