Me: 'People are dying out there. We're going.' Sefu: 'But the will—' Me: 'The will can wait.' I was already heading for the dock. Sefu: 'You think he'd like that? You helping, instead of listening?' That one landed.

We rowed out. Helped pull people to safety. For hours. No talking. Just work. When we got back, the boathouse was tilting. Sefu: 'We should have gone down.' Me: 'Yeah. I think we should have.'

Three days later, the water stopped rising. Receded. Sefu found me. Sefu: 'He did something down there. He must have.' Me: 'But we never even went.' Sefu: 'Exactly. Maybe he knew we wouldn't. Maybe that was the whole plan.'
