"The insurance claims are warnings," Carol said. "I file them three days out. Just before the water spikes—the algae bloom, the chemical change. If someone sees their name and leaves town..." She shrugged. "Some do. Most don't. I save who I can."

"So the claims are real," I said. "You're not making them up." "They're based on real patterns," Carol said. "Three days before the water spikes, something changes. The light. The smell. Animals avoid it. I've learned to read the signs." She squeezed my arm. "Now you need to learn too."
