"I know who you are," Tom said. "Carol's been waiting for someone like you. But I have to warn you: once you know the truth, the council finds out." "How would they—" "Because I'm going to have to tell them. It's my job. And they pay me better than Carol does."
Tom gave me an envelope. Inside: copies of the original test results. His analysis. His signature. "If I disappear from this," he said, "they know it was you who talked. So disappear first. Run." He walked toward the door. I called out: "Tom, wait—" He didn't turn around.
