Thirty seconds later: "I'm Theo. Vienna." "Alex. Venice." She said it like reading from a script. But she didn't move away. She just... stayed. Like maybe being alone with her own thoughts was worse than standing next to a stranger. I didn't push. Some connections start in the gaps between words.

Her phone buzzed. She looked at it and her face went tight. "Everything okay?" I asked. "My friend was supposed to pick me up from Venice. She's canceling." She stared at the message. "I don't have anyone else in that city. I don't know what I was thinking booking this alone." She looked genuinely lost.

"I could meet you," I said. "Venice is an hour from here. I'd take the train, find you, make sure you're not stranded." She stared at me. "Why would a stranger do that?" "Because right now, you're the only person who gets it." She grabbed my number. When our trains boarded, we both had a reason to come back.
