Two Weeks, Wrong City

We didn't talk. Just stood there, both waiting, both alone even though we weren't. The board stayed dark. People moved past. I thought about saying something. She looked like she wanted someone to. But neither of us did. The silence got heavier.

Her phone lit up. She answered. "Hi... yeah, I'm at the station... No, I... I don't know..." Her voice got smaller. "I can't do this right now." She hung up. Stood there looking at nothing. I watched her. "Hey," I said carefully. "Are you...?" She wiped her eyes. "My life is falling apart."

"Not all at once, it's not," I said. She looked at me. "I'm going to Venice for two weeks alone because everyone I rely on is either too tired or too gone. And I'm supposed to feel better and I don't know if that's possible." "You're not supposed to feel better," I said. "You're supposed to feel different. And you will, because you're brave." She took my hand. Something real happened.
