Mr. Okafor is already at the gate when I turn around. Just standing there. Staring at his empty plot. His hands are in his pockets. He hasn't noticed the pumpkin's gone yet. Or maybe he has and he's trying to work out what it means.
Mrs. Pratt walks over. 'Okafor, that's your—' 'I know.' He doesn't look at her. His eyes are on the pumpkin like he's trying to memorize it. Like it might disappear again.

They stand there. Both of them. Looking at the pumpkin. Nobody wants to touch it again. After a minute Mrs. Pratt says, 'We have to tell the committee.' It's the first time I've heard real fear in her voice. This isn't a prank anymore.
