We didn't talk. Just stood there, both waiting, both alone even though we weren't. The board stayed dark. People moved past. I thought about saying something. She looked like she wanted someone to. But neither of us did. The silence got heavier.

The Venice train started boarding. She gathered her stuff. "I should go." "Yeah," I said. She nodded and turned toward the line. I wanted her to turn back. She didn't. I never saw her face again.
