Mistress Pell opened the door before Edda even knocked. She looked at the chart and nodded slowly. 'So it's started with you,' she said. 'Every few lifetimes, the sea chooses a mapmaker. Whatever you draw, the world tries to obey. But the sea always asks for something back.' Edda swallowed hard and asked what the price would be.

Pell said the price was simple: a true mapmaker must protect every shore they create. Edda nodded, ran to the cliffs, and drew a calm safe harbor for the incoming ships. They sailed in unharmed. From that day Edda became the keeper of her own coast, watching over every ship that came near it.
