"Don't," Mara says. Just that. Theo and Diane both look at her. Mara's hands are shaking a little. "Something's wrong about this. If he wanted us to have them, he would've given them to us."
"We have a right to know," Diane says, hard. "He left them for us to find. This was intentional." "Or intentionally hidden," Mara shoots back. "Which means he didn't want us to know." "That's cowardly." Mara flinches.

They argue until the sun comes up. Mara pacing. Diane on the couch, arms crossed. Theo trying to mediate, then giving up. By 6 AM, they're not speaking. By 7 AM, Mara goes to check on Diane's hotel. But she never booked one. And her car's gone.
