The woman's words stuck with him. The next morning, Eli walked into the depot office and asked Marcus a question he'd never dared ask: could the route be saved if enough people spoke up? Marcus leaned back, surprised. 'Funny you ask,' he said. 'There's a vote next week.'
At the vote, the numbers came in short. The route would close as planned. Eli felt the loss, but Marcus pulled him aside. 'They want you driving the new crosstown line,' he said. 'Same bus, new street.' Eli laughed for the first time in weeks. Maybe it wasn't the end after all.
