Devon grabbed Mara's arm and hauled her back from the water before she could step in. The bubbles stopped instantly. "Whatever's down there wanted you to follow," he panted. They sat on the dock, hearts pounding, and made a rule out loud: nobody touches the water. Not tonight, not ever.

They decided to do what the town never would. Standing on the dock at dawn, Mara spoke clearly into the recorder: the camp, the missing boy, the headcount lie, all of it. For the first time in nineteen years, when she finished, the lake gave back a soft, clean echo. Whatever waited there finally let go.
