Mara decided to test the echo thing properly. She clapped, shouted, and banged a paddle on the dock. Nothing came back. "That's not normal," Devon said, checking his audio levels. The waveform showed their voices, then flat silence where the bounce should be. "Something here is eating sound," he whispered.

Priya backed away from the dock and tripped over a rusted speaker bolted to a post. Wires ran from it into the ground, toward the lake. "It's a sound system," she said. "The whole shoreline is wired." Someone, long ago, had set this place up to kill every echo on purpose.
