mystery◐ TeenMara decided to test the echo thing properly. She clapped, shouted, and banged a paddle on the dock. Nothing came back. "That's not normal," Devon said, checking his audio levels. The waveform showed their voices, then flat silence where the bounce should be. "Something here is eating sound," he whispered.
Mara found an old metal sign half-buried in mud: SWIM TEST AREA. Below it, someone had spray-painted three words: THEY STILL COUNT. "Count what?" she said. Devon pointed at the water. Tiny bubbles were rising in a perfect line, like footsteps walking out toward the middle.
