Counterfeit Constellations
mystery◐ Teen5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
Priya traced the angle of her telescope down to the horizon. The signal wasn't deep in space at all. It lined up exactly with the old water tower across town, the one shut down for years. The "star" was a light on top of it, aimed straight up. She grabbed her bike and went.
At the water tower a man in a security jacket stepped out of the shadows. "You're the third kid this week," he sighed. "It's a school science project. Some senior rigged a fake star to mess with people." He pointed to a homemade gadget bolted up top. The big mystery deflated into a prank, and Priya laughed at herself the whole ride home.
