"It's the pancakes," Mara said suddenly. "Every loop, we eat them. Every loop, it resets. What if eating them is what locks us in?" Five plates of gray cardboard pancakes sat steaming on the table. Nobody had finished theirs yet this time.
Mara took one tiny bite to test the idea. Big mistake. The cardboard taste filled her whole mouth and the room flickered. 7:02. Back to the sleeping bags, back to the start. "No bites," she gasped on the next loop. "Not even one. Now we know."

On the new loop, all five of them flipped their plates upside down the second they woke, refusing every bite. The clock strained at 7:02, shuddered, and rolled forward. 7:03. Real sun spilled across the floor. "We beat it," Pip whispered. "We just had to say no."
