Milo's hand shook and the bell clanged loud. The tape on the clapper popped off. Every book sprang fully awake, spines snapping out like teeth. Posy grabbed his sleeve. "Run! The side door, NOW!" They sprinted through the stacks as books flapped after them.
Milo and Posy crashed through the side door into the parking lot. Books spilled out after them, then stopped cold at the doorway, unable to cross into the open air. The door swung shut and the lock snapped tight. The two of them sat on the curb, gasping and laughing with relief.
