Behind the desk, the girl pressed a finger to her lips. "I'm Posy. I fell asleep here too, ages ago." She pointed at a thick red book on the top shelf. "That one's the Keeper. If it opens its cover, everybody wakes. We have to slip out before it does."

Milo had a better idea. "What if we put the Keeper to sleep for good?" Posy's eyes went wide. "You'd have to read it the bedtime story from the kids' shelf. Out loud. Right under it. If your voice shakes, it wakes instead." Milo swallowed and nodded.

Milo opened the bedtime book and read it slow and steady, his voice calm and even. The Keeper's trembling eased. Around the room, breathing slowed into deep, sleepy waves. By the last page, the whole library was fast asleep, and the side door clicked unlocked on its own.
