The Gardener of Slow Light
sci-fiEveryone5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
Mira reached toward the glowing plants, and the moment she touched a leaf, the whole room dimmed. The light wasn't coming from the plants. It was passing through them, from somewhere far beyond the wall. She pressed her ear to the cold metal and heard it: a slow, steady pulse, like a giant heartbeat, getting louder.
Mira backed away from the pulsing wall, grabbed a sample jar, and pressed it to a glowing leaf. The light seeped into the jar and stayed there, bright and warm. "If I can't reach you," she whispered to the wall, "I'll carry your light myself." She sealed the jar, and the heartbeat seemed to slow, calm now, as if it had finally been heard.
