The Gardener of Slow Light

Mira reached toward the glowing plants, and the moment she touched a leaf, the whole room dimmed. The light wasn't coming from the plants. It was passing through them, from somewhere far beyond the wall. She pressed her ear to the cold metal and heard it: a slow, steady pulse, like a giant heartbeat, getting louder.

Mira found a maintenance panel in the wall and pried it open. Behind it, a tunnel glowed with soft light, and the heartbeat sound rolled out warm and steady. At the end sat a huge seed, taller than her, breathing light in and out. A voice came from it in her grandmother's tone: "You found me. Now help me bloom." Mira reached out and pressed both hands to its glowing shell.
