The Memory Foundry
sci-fi◐ Mature5 contributors · 5 paragraphs deep
Mara rips the canister out of the cradle, heart pounding. The Foundry took this from her, a whole hour, a whole child, and erased it so cleanly she never noticed the hole. She pulls up the master archive and searches her own name. Forty-two canisters come up. Forty-two hours of her life, sold without her knowing.
Mara copies all forty-two files onto a drive and walks out the front door at dawn with them in her pocket. The plan is simple: find a reporter, expose the Foundry, get her hours back. But the gate scanner beeps as she passes. A calm voice over the speaker says, 'Ms. Vance, please return to processing.' She doesn't stop. She runs, drive in hand, out into the waking city, and she does not look back.
