The Memory Foundry

sci-fi◐ Mature

Mara rips the canister out of the cradle, heart pounding. The Foundry took this from her, a whole hour, a whole child, and erased it so cleanly she never noticed the hole. She pulls up the master archive and searches her own name. Forty-two canisters come up. Forty-two hours of her life, sold without her knowing.

Mara plays the other forty-one hours one after another. A wedding. A dog she loved. Her mother, alive and singing. The Foundry didn't take random joy. They took everyone she ever loved and sold it piece by piece. The screen asks: Restore to seller? Yes / No. She presses Yes. The hours pour back into her all at once, and she drops to her knees on the office floor, finally whole, remembering everything.
