Mara hesitates one second too long. Boots ring on the deck stairs — the captain, drawn up by the crane noise. "What've you got?" he calls. The voice in her ear hisses: "Tell him it's empty. Tell him now, or I'm scrap and you're just crew."

Mara tells the truth. "It's awake, Cap. It talks. It offered me coordinates." The captain's face goes hard. He pulls the server's plug from her deck himself and signals the crew. "Live units go to corporate sealed," he says. "You should've stayed quiet, Mara." Two crew step toward her.

Mara doesn't wait to be grabbed. Before the captain can pull her deck away, she slams her palm onto the server's casing and shouts, "Then take ME instead — copy and run!" The lights flare. Her deck goes hot in her hand. The captain freezes as every screen on the bridge lights up at once with the same two words: SHE'S CARRYING. Mara backs toward the rail, the whole machine riding in her gear now, the most valuable salvage on the ship.
