What the Briar Remembers

The humming rose into a sound like a hundred people groaning at once. Mirren saw the truth: the rowan only quieted one grave at a time, and the field had thousands. She couldn't out-bundle the whole hill. She needed the source — whatever was calling them. She turned toward the old watchtower, the only thing tall enough to wake a forest.
Mirren climbed the tower and found a skeleton ringing the bell — the warden from before Aldous, its jaw wired open, swung by the wind through a hole in the wall. She stuffed the bell's mouth with rowan and her own cloak. The sound choked and died. Below, the forest went quiet, and the half-risen dead slid back into the dark.
