"Then I'll come with you," Mara hears herself say. Theo blinks. "You'd leave Chicago? Your mom, your job, all of it?" "For you, yeah," she says. "I think I would." Saying it out loud makes it real, and terrifying, and somehow right.
Theo shakes his head slowly. "You'd resent me by spring. You love this city. I won't be the guy who took it from you." Mara pulls her hand back. "So you'd rather decide for me?" The warmth between them cools fast, like the coffee. They sit in a silence that feels final.
